How to Record a Grand Piano with Two Microphones

A grand piano can fill a room with powerful bass, clear midrange, and shimmering treble, but capturing that full range is rarely as simple as placing a pair of microphones over the strings. The instrument radiates sound from the soundboard, lid, frame, strings, and surrounding room, so small changes in microphone position can alter the balance dramatically.

A two-microphone setup gives you enough flexibility to create a convincing stereo image while keeping the recording manageable. It can suit classical performances, singer-songwriter sessions, film cues, jazz, pop, and piano-based production. The best results come from treating microphone placement, room acoustics, phase alignment, and performance dynamics as parts of the same process.

You do not need the most expensive microphones to begin. A matched pair of condensers can provide detail and stereo depth, while two different microphones may offer useful tonal contrast. The important step is to listen carefully before committing to a position.

Prepare the Piano and Recording Space

Start by making the piano itself as consistent as possible. Ask a piano technician to tune it before an important session, especially if the instrument has recently moved or will be recorded for a release. Check for rattles, noisy pedals, buzzing strings, and mechanical sounds that microphones may exaggerate.

You can also use two microphones as a blended tonal pair rather than a strict stereo pair. For example, one microphone may focus on the bass and low mids while the other captures treble clarity. This approach gives control, but it can sound less natural if the microphones are too close to different sections of the keyboard.

Find a Balanced Starting Position

A useful starting point is to place the microphones inside the piano, above the strings, approximately halfway between the hammers and the curve of the lid. Aim the capsules toward the general center of the instrument rather than directly at individual strings. Begin around 20 to 30 centimeters above the strings, then adjust by ear.

If the sound is too percussive, move the microphones farther from the hammers or raise them slightly. If the piano lacks definition, move them closer or angle them toward the attack point. Control Phase, Height, and Lid Position

The listener should sense the size of the instrument and the acoustic space around it.

For pop, rock, or singer-songwriter production, a closer setup may be more useful. It can keep the piano present beneath vocals and guitars while preserving enough stereo width for the arrangement. If the piano must support a dense mix, prioritize a defined midrange and controlled low end over a huge room sound.

Jazz and contemporary instrumental music may call for a compromise between intimacy and ambience. A pair just inside the lid can capture touch and dynamics, while a reflective room contributes natural sustain. When the two microphones are different models, assign each one a clear purpose. A brighter condenser can provide articulation in the upper register, while a warmer microphone can add body. Set Gain and Monitor the Performance

Grand piano transients can be surprisingly strong, particularly during forceful accents.
