Granular synthesis turns tiny fragments of recorded sound into evolving musical material. A grain may last only a few milliseconds, yet a stream of grains can become a shimmering pad, a rough percussive cloud, a fragmented vocal, or an almost unrecognisable environmental texture. The technique sits between sampling and synthesis, giving producers detailed control over the movement and identity of a sound.

Its appeal comes from the way it stretches familiar material beyond its original purpose. A single piano note can become a drifting harmonic bed, while a field recording of rain can supply soft rhythmic particles. By changing grain position, duration, density, pitch and stereo placement, producers can build soundscapes that feel alive rather than simply looped.
